Bayer 04 Leverkusen vs FSV Mainz 05 – February 28, 2026

On February 28, 2026, I had the opportunity to attend my first Bundesliga match, as Bayer 04 Leverkusen hosted FSV Mainz 05 at the iconic BayArena. As part of our final day of the International Experience, we were fortunate to receive tickets from Leverkusen for this match, which was an unforgettable way to experience German football culture firsthand.

A tense Bundesliga encounter unfolded in Leverkusen, where the hosts were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against a resilient Mainz side. Despite dominating possession and territory for much of the match, Leverkusen needed a late intervention to avoid a disappointing home defeat.

The opening 45 minutes lacked clear-cut chances, with Leverkusen controlling over 60% of possession but struggling to break down Mainz’s compact defensive structure. The visitors, fighting near the bottom of the table, showed discipline and patience, limiting the hosts to speculative efforts from distance.

The breakthrough came in the 67th minute, and it was Mainz who struck first. A quick transition caught Leverkusen off guard, allowing Sheraldo Becker to finish clinically from inside the box after a fast break. It was a goal that stunned the BayArena crowd and highlighted Mainz’s tactical approach, absorbing pressure and exploiting space on the counterattack.

With time running out and frustration building, Leverkusen finally found its breakthrough. In the 88th minute, defender Jarell Quansah rose to the occasion, scoring a crucial equalizer to rescue a point for the home side. The late goal sparked relief rather than celebration, as Leverkusen avoided back-to-back setbacks but were left ruing missed opportunities.

From a journalist’s perspective and as a first-time Bundesliga attendee, the atmosphere at the BayArena was electric. The contrast in styles was clear: Leverkusen’s control versus Mainz’s resilience. While the result may have felt like two points dropped for the hosts, the late equalizer ensured the evening ended with a sense of drama, fitting for a first live Bundesliga experience.
