On Friday, April 10, 2026, I had the opportunity to photograph the La Liga match between Real Madrid and Girona FC at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Surrounded by a packed stadium and an electric atmosphere, I worked pitch-side alongside a talented group of professional photographers, capturing high-intensity moments as they unfolded in real time.
This experience challenged me to think quickly, adapt to constant movement, and refine my ability to anticipate key plays. Collaborating with experienced professionals also gave me valuable insight into the pace and precision required in sports photography at the highest level.
Being part of such a high-profile match not only strengthened my technical skills but also reinforced my passion for capturing live sporting events and telling stories through visual media.
I am beyond grateful for this experience and wanted to share some of the pictures I captured.
Under the lights of the Bernabéu Stadium, Real Madrid were held to a 1–1 draw by Girona FC in a match defined by relentless tempo, missed chances, and late controversy.
From the opening whistle, both sides imposed an aggressive, possession-based approach, creating a breathless rhythm that produced opportunities at both ends. Inside 10 minutes, Kylian Mbappé came within inches of opening the scoring, latching onto a precise pass from Brahim Díaz, only to be denied by a crucial goal-line clearance from Álex Moreno. Girona responded swiftly, just four minutes later, with a powerful strike from Ounahi that forced a sharp save from Andriy Lunin.
Madrid continued to push. In the 22nd minute, another inviting delivery from Brahim found Jude Bellingham arriving late in the box, but his delicate touch drifted painfully wide. As the first half wore on, the hosts came closer still: a clever cut-back from Dani Carvajal teed up Federico Valverde, whose driven effort was spectacularly turned away by goalkeeper Gazzaniga.
The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after the half. Following a high turnover initiated by Vinícius Júnior, Madrid worked the ball through midfield before Fede Valverde stepped up in the 51st minute, unleashing a right-footed strike from outside the box that flew past the keeper to make it 1–0.
Madrid nearly doubled their lead moments later when Vinícius tested Gazzaniga again in the 56th minute, but the goalkeeper held firm. That miss proved costly. In the 61st minute, Girona punished the hosts as Lemar fired home from the edge of the area, levelling the match at 1–1 against the run of play.
Stung into action, Madrid pushed forward relentlessly in search of a winner. Their best chance came in the 86th minute when Valverde slipped a perfectly weighted through ball to Mbappé, whose left-footed effort was once again denied by the outstanding Gazzaniga.
Controversy followed almost immediately. A minute later, Mbappé went down inside the box after contact with Vitor Reis’s arm, prompting loud appeals for a penalty. Neither referee Alberola Rojas nor the VAR intervened, and play continued.
Despite a barrage of late pressure, Madrid could not find a decisive breakthrough. What might have been a commanding victory instead ended in dropped points—Valverde’s stunning opener ultimately cancelled out by Girona’s clinical equalizer in a match that showcased both Madrid’s attacking firepower and their inability to kill the game when on top.
