On May 10, 2026, at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano, Real Madrid Femenino edged past Atlético de Madrid Femenino 1-0 in a tense Liga F derby on Sunday evening, thanks to a moment of brilliance from Caroline Weir that lit up an otherwise fiercely contested encounter.
Real Madrid started as the stronger side and immediately pinned Atlético back with aggressive attacking play down the flanks. Inside the opening three minutes, Linda Caicedo burst into the penalty area and fired narrowly wide after cutting onto her right foot. Moments later, the Colombian winger was involved again, delivering a dangerous cross that found Naomie Feller, whose effort crashed against the crossbar with Atlético goalkeeper Lola Gallardo beaten.
The hosts continued to dominate possession and believed they should have had a penalty midway through the first half when Real Madrid appealed for handball inside the Atlético area. Head coach Pau Quesada demanded a VAR review, but after consulting the monitor, the referee waved away the protests.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 25th minute, and it came spectacularly. Atlético partially cleared a Madrid attack, but the loose ball dropped invitingly inside the box for Weir. The Scottish midfielder reacted instantly, unleashing a sensational left-footed volley that flew into the top corner beyond Gallardo’s reach.
Atlético improved significantly after halftime and began to pressure Madrid’s back line with greater intensity. The visitors nearly found an equalizer when a powerful effort rattled the crossbar during a sustained spell of pressure. Amaiur Sarriegi and Synne Jensen both squandered promising opportunities as Atlético pushed numbers forward in search of a late breakthrough.
Real Madrid, however, stood firm defensively. Goalkeeper Merle Frohms produced several important saves during the closing stages, preserving Madrid’s narrow advantage as Atlético threw everything into the final minutes. A controversial moment also arrived late on when Atlético appealed for a handball against Sheila García inside the area, but once again the officials dismissed the claims.
When the final whistle sounded, Real Madrid celebrated a hard-fought derby victory, their 21st league win of the season. For Atlético, the defeat ended an impressive winning streak and served as a frustrating dress rehearsal ahead of their upcoming Copa de la Reina final.
As I continue my discussions with women in sports, I connected with Kaytlin Viera to learn more about her role in the industry, her career journey, and the professional accomplishment she values most.
Hi, my name is Kaytlin Viera. I’m 23 years old, and I was born in Havana, Cuba. I moved to the United States when I was 12 and have been living in Miami ever since. Moving to a whole different country with a different language, culture, and community was definitely a challenge, but it has shaped who I am today. I would be a totally different person if I had never left Cuba.
I recently had the opportunity to live in Madrid for 11 months while completing my master’s degree in Sports Journalism and Communication. That experience was unforgettable. It was a year full of personal and professional growth. I met people from all over the world, built lifelong friendships, and stepped out of my comfort zone in ways I never had before.
Currently, I work in the social media team for the Miami Marlins and loanDepot park. I create content around the team, the players, and events at the ballpark. One of my biggest accomplishments so far has been contributing to a high-impact social media campaign during a 12-day global event. My team and I reached more than 40 million accounts, produced over 500 pieces, and grew more than 60k followers for all the loanDepot park social media accounts.
Something I’m proud of is putting myself out there and taking risks. I’m proud of stepping outside my comfort zone. I’m proud that I moved to another country even though I was scared to do it alone, but I still did it. I’m proud that I pursued my dream of working in sports, and every day I challenged myself to keep pushing boundaries. Letting myself be comfortable with the uncomfortable has led me to more opportunities and being more confident.
Real Madrid’s victory over Atlético showcased not only the intensity and quality of women’s football but also the continued growth and visibility of the women’s game on a global stage. Speaking with Kaytlin Viera further highlighted how women in sports are helping shape that progress both on and off the field. Through her experiences in sports media, international education, and professional content creation, Viera’s journey reflects the determination, resilience, and passion that continue to drive the industry forward. As women’s sports continue to expand in popularity and influence, stories like hers demonstrate the importance of embracing challenges, taking risks, and creating opportunities for future generations in sport.
