Champions League Day One: Atlético Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspur

On March 10, 2026, Atlético Madrid produced a commanding performance to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 5–2 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie at the Estadio Metropolitano.

The Spanish side seized control of the match early, capitalizing on defensive mistakes to build a substantial lead within the opening stages. Marcos Llorente opened the scoring in the 6th minute after a misplaced clearance allowed him to finish from close range. Atlético quickly extended their advantage when Antoine Griezmann scored before Julián Álvarez added another moments later, leaving Tottenham trailing 3–0 inside the first quarter of an hour.

The difficult start prompted an early tactical change from Tottenham. After conceding the third goal, head coach Ange Postecoglou replaced starting goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario with Fraser Forster in an attempt to steady the defence and halt Atlético’s momentum. However, Atlético continued to press their advantage. Robin Le Normand scored the hosts’ fourth goal in the 22nd minute, completing a remarkable early spell that put Atlético firmly in control.

Tottenham responded shortly afterward when Pedro Porro pulled a goal back in the 26th minute, finishing after an assist from Richarlison to reduce the deficit before halftime. Despite the setback, Atlético restored their dominance early in the second half when Álvarez scored his second goal of the night on a counterattack to make it 5–1.

Tottenham managed a second goal in the 76th minute through Dominic Solanke, who capitalized on a mistake from Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak to finish from close range. However, the visitors were unable to close the gap further as Atlético maintained control in the closing stages.

The result gives Atlético Madrid a three-goal advantage heading into the second leg in London, leaving Tottenham with a significant loss to overcome if they hope to progress to the quarter-finals.
