On an early morning in Düsseldorf on February 28, 2026, we set out for Dortmund for one of the final experiences of our international learning trip. As the trip began to wind down, this visit offered an opportunity to reflect on the cultural foundations of German football. Upon arrival, we visited the German Football Museum for a guided tour. This immersive venue combines permanent and rotating exhibitions to present the history of German football in engaging, interactive formats. Rather than functioning as a traditional museum, it operates as an experiential space that connects history, emotion, and national identity.

During the visit, I observed how the museum uses multimedia storytelling to transform historical moments and fan culture into brand equity and visitor engagement. This highlights how storytelling can be strategically used to strengthen both cultural relevance and commercial value within sports organizations.

I also noted how it incorporates complex chapters of football and society into an accessible narrative, while effectively monetizing the visitor experience through retail, food and beverage services, events, and educational programming. This demonstrates how sports institutions can balance authenticity with commercialization, ensuring both educational impact and financial sustainability.

Our guide provided insightful and detailed explanations throughout the tour, further reinforcing the broader cultural and societal significance of football in Germany.

Following the visit, we travelled to Leverkusen, where we attended a Bundesliga match at the BayArena between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FSV Mainz 05. The tickets for this match were generously provided by the club. Attending a live match after exploring the historical and cultural dimensions of the sport created a full-circle experience, connecting past, present, and practice.

My match report of this game will be featured in my next post.

This experience served as a meaningful conclusion to the trip, bringing together many of the themes explored throughout the week. I am grateful for the four days of wonderful activities our instructor organized and guided my colleagues and I through. From governance and innovation to fan culture and commercialization, each experience contributed to a deeper understanding of how the global sports industry operates as an interconnected ecosystem.
