On December 11, 2025, Real Madrid returns home to Movistar Arena, 20 days after their 100-99 win against Zalgiris and with four consecutive wins under their belt.
Real Madrid’s EuroLeague clash against Baskonia was a night of controlled aggression and emotional moments. A respectful minute of silence was held before tip-off, honouring the memory of former Real Madrid International Sports Schools coach Xabier Azkargorta and renowned journalist and club supporter Alfonso Ussía, creating a heavy, determined atmosphere within the Movistar Arena.
The home side started strongly, trading baskets with Baskonia in a lively opening quarter. Early runs saw contributions across the board, but Edwin Campazzo and Guerschon Yabusele helped Madrid pull ahead after a hard-fought opening ten minutes. A 9-0 Madrid run, featuring dominant paint play from Walter Tavares, pushed Real Madrid in front by the first quarter’s end.
As the second quarter unfolded, turnovers and aggressive defence slowed the scoring. Madrid’s outside shooting was limited, but resilience from players like Yonathan Maledon and Rudy Fernández helped maintain a slender lead heading into halftime. Baskonia stayed within touch thanks to disciplined ball movement and perimeter effort, keeping the contest finely poised at the break.
The third quarter saw Real Madrid elevate their intensity on both ends. Campazzo and Mario Hezonja combined for a torrid scoring stretch that opened a double-digit advantage. Despite efforts from Baskonia’s shooters to stem the tide, Real Madrid’s physical defence and timely baskets forced the visitors to chase the game. By the end of the period, the scoreboard reflected Madrid’s growing control.
Baskonia briefly threatened a comeback early in the final period, sparked by a burst from their leading scorer that trimmed the deficit. Yet Madrid responded with poise: a decisive 11-0 run featuring timely buckets from Hezonja, Campazzo and contributions across the rotation sealed the result. Madrid held firm in the closing moments to secure a 94-87 victory, extending their winning streak and cementing another strong EuroLeague performance at home.
I had the opportunity after the game to attend their press conference, which included the head coach of Real Madrid, Sergio Scariolo and the head coach of Baskonia, Pablo Laso.
Standout player: Théo Maledon with 15 points and a Performance Index Rating (PIR) of 20
This result marked Real Madrid’s seventh consecutive win across all competitions, with four of those wins coming in European play, underscoring their resurgence in both domestic and continental challenges.
